Iced tea increases risk of kidney stones

MAYWOOD, Ill. (UPI) -- A U.S. doctor warns iced tea contains high amounts of oxalate which can lead to kidney stones.

Dr. John Milner of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, in Maywood, Ill., advises patients trying to ward off painful kidney stones to not reach for the iced tea.

"For many people, iced tea is potentially one of the worst things they can drink," Milner says in a statement. "For people who have a tendency to form kidney stones, it's definitely one of the worst things you can drink."

Kidney stones are crystals that form in the kidneys or ureters, the small tubes that drain the urine from the kidney to the bladder, Milner explains. The most common cause of kidney stones is the failure to drink enough fluids. Dehydration combined with increased iced tea consumption raises the risk of kidney stones in people prone to develop them.

"People are told that in the summertime they should drink more fluids," Milner says. "A lot of people choose to drink more iced tea, thinking it's a tastier alternative. However, in terms of kidney stones, they're getting it going and coming. They're actually doing themselves a disservice."

To remain hydrated there is no better alternative than water, Milner said.

Think about it

For the 80% or more of the worlds population who do not have the risk factors for kidney stones, like high blood calcium, then tea is no problem. The fact is that tea is a diuretic, so if you drink tea, you will have to also drink other fluids as well, which is why the major tea drinking areas: Britain, the Orient, and the Southern US, also drink water and other fluids to keep hydrated. I've drank several quarts of tea a week for over a year and Ive had no problems. Bottom line: If you have risk factors, enjoy in moderation, if you don't, enjoy WITHOUT moderation, just be sure to drink a glass of water every now and then for good measure.

Iced Tea and Kidney Stones

This article does not give any reason why Iced Tea is supposed to cause kidney stones. The article may as well have been written by an idiot. It is un-scientific, un-informative, and useless.

As a person who suffers from kidney stones, I can tell you that the more tea I drink, the more my kidneys do bother me. I have had 7 and was told a long time ago that I should avoid tea and tomatoes. Well, I live in the south and there are 2 things, I ain't gonna live without and that is tea and tomatoes. I just do both in moderation. I also have to say that the more kidney stones I have, it seems the easier they get. You learn how to deal with them!

Iced Tea

This doctor knows that antioxidants in tea are very good for you and help to keep you healthy. If you are healthy, then you won't be needing his services and he will loose money. That is why he does not want you to drink the tea.
